EXPLORING MILAN

Today was the first official day living in Milan, and after a bit of a rough night's sleep I was curious what the day was going to bring. Alannah, having arrived a couple of days earlier, seemed to have already been exploring the centre, which was helpful as she knew the way to the Duomo. Luckily the tram stops right outside our little apartment which will definitely come in handy. After purchasing tickets from a Tabacchi shop, it took us around 20 minutes to get to the centre which allowed me to take in the surrounding areas. I was completely mesmerized by the Duomo as it is very colossal and equally remarkable - it looks like a postcard except you’re one of the people stood in front of it. Sadly the line was too long for us to go in and we got a little bit scared of the soldiers with guns so we decided to come back another day. We did however take the opportunity to look at some of the shopping areas surrounding the cathedral. Some of my favourites included Max Mara - they managed to make the quirkiest outfit look effortless and elegant - Zara, La Rinascente and Excelsior. The latter being a department store situated in a historic building at Galleria del Corso 4, in the heart of Milan, architecturally designed by Jean Nouvel. We also ended up in a ‘designer’ outlet store - as I get easily persuaded by these types of things - however the clothes and accessories they were trying to sell seemed to be at least 20 years old and kind of trashy, which was a bit of a disappointment as it would’ve been nice to find a reasonably priced Louis Vuitton on my first day. The rest of the day consisted of us looking for a nice place to eat - unfortunately we settled for a McDonalds, which to our surprise serves beer with lunch - and inspecting the supermarkets around the apartment.
--------------------------------------------------------
Milan seems to be a really inspiring place to live in with great energy and lovely people - even if someone tries to sell you a selfie stick or tie a bracelet around your wrist every five minutes - and I can’t wait to explore the restaurants, cafes, shops and sights properly. The first impressions of the area we live in, Bovisa, weren’t that great as we seem to be away from everything excluding uni, which I guess is a good thing as we will be motivated to go in for our lectures. Also looking at some of the pictures of the other girls apartments did make me feel a bit jealous as they seem to be living in luxury, compared to me and Alannah who opted out to save money by sharing a room.
