FASHION IN THE ARTS

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from our first ‘Fashion in the Arts’ lecture, as it took a bit of persuading from the Politecnico reps to make me take on this module, however I tried to keep an open mind having previously enjoyed going to art exhibitions and looking at how fashion can be used as art. After turning up a little late - finding the building proved to be a little difficult as it is situated away from the rest of the uni - we realised that there was a guest speaker present and the teachers set up a video camera at the back of the classroom. Slightly unsure of what was going on we took our seats and waited. It turned out that the first two hours of the lecture were carried out by an Italian guest speaker - purely in Italian. So after patiently sitting through the first half of the lecture, trying to grasp the ideas the speaker was trying to put across, we were told that the second half would be a translation of what’s already been said. The next two hours proved to be even more difficult for us to understand as the PowerPoint used for the second part contained completely different images to the first half. I also found it rather strenuous to understand the English translation as the teacher was using a lot of Italian phrases and seemed to finish each sentence with a ‘no?’. The module itself seemed to be more focused on historical art and traditional paintings, and had little to do with fashion.

Overall I was a bit disappointed with the lesson as no one explained to us what we’d be doing in the next few months or what the exam was going to be on and felt a little discouraged to continue with the module.
