MILANO NIGHTLIFE

So after visiting a few bars and clubs recently I thought I would take the opportunity to talk about the Milano nightlife a little bit and give a somewhat review of each place. ESN, the Erasmus Student Network, are really good at organising cheap nights out - prices in Milan are very extortionate with drinks costing from €7 - €10 - and allow you to meet a lot of new people from different countries who are doing erasmus, or local Italian students. They also organise fun trips abroad and to well known Italian places, and host entertaining student events, be it speed dating or bowling.

Hollywood Rythmoteque was one of the first clubs we ever visited in Italy, and after hearing it’s supposedly one of the most famous in Milan, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed as it didn’t live up to its name. Luckily we went with ESN for one of their student nights, as on a normal night out you have to spend €10 just for one drink, which compared to Birmingham’s £2.50 double vodka, is a big adjustment. The music wasn’t to my personal taste, with artists like Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias being favoured by the DJ, however it was still fun to let my hair down and dance around for a few hours.

The Old Fashion Club is very popular with students as every Wednesday the club puts out a free buffet with a different country theme each week - we went to the English one for roast beef - and all you have to pay is €10 which gets you a drink and entry. I was quite impressed with this arrangement as the first time I ever went there, I didn’t pay anything and still got to enjoy the buffet and got a free drink. It’s apparent that a lot of people only go there to eat for free, however the bar / eating place turns into a nightclub at around 11 o’clock for anyone who fancies a dance.

Navigli is one of the most beautiful and popular places in Milan as it is the place to be seen in - I’ve seen some of the best street style there - as the area is not only full of amazing places to eat or drink in, there are also a lot of great bookshops, charity shops, clothes boutiques, cafes and much more. The area has a particularly good atmosphere and looks especially pretty at night time. I would recommend going there for an aperitivo - happy hour that is extremely popular in Italy- where you can eat all you want for around €8 whilst enjoying a drink. After having some food we ventured out a little trying to find a nice cocktail bar and after getting served appetizing drinks - except for Alannah who chose the weirdest chilli flavoured cocktail - by a Keanu Reeves look alike, chatted to some nice Italian locals.

The Ordinary Market has probably been my favourite bar so far as the music / people / atmosphere were exceptionally good - we waited for about an hour trying to get in as it is one of the places where all the beautiful and popular people of Milan go to for a night out. We didn’t have to pay entry, however the drinks were a little overpriced at around €12, however the music played by the DJ made up for the money we spent. I would probably compare the club to a Magic Door night in Birmingham - to anyone who’s ever been - and would definitely recommend going as you will meet some really cool people and have a really good time. After leaving the club we quickly stopped off at a bakery - there tends to be more sweet stuff available for drunk people than savoury - grabbed a cake and tried to look for a taxi. Little tip - save a taxi number before going out as most of the time they’re really difficult to flag down, especially after a night out.

Extremely weird toilets in the Old Fashion Club

I know it’s weird to write about the toilets in a travelling blog but these are hysterical - a lot of places in Italy tend to not have normal toilets resulting in disgusting, urine-covered floors with a distinctive odour. Even the flush is placed on the floor - so keep that in mind to avoid confusion.
