In the first half of the lecture - Friday being our longest day with an 8 hour lecture - the professor carried out a briefing of the several projects we would have to complete in the next few months, including designing a concept for a boutique for a luxury brand of our choice. The store would be located in the Fashion District on via Gesu, one of Milan’s most affluent areas. The final delivery of this project would include diagrams and layouts, plans & sections, 3D renderings and sketches. For this we looked at a wide range of sketches from famous architects and interior designers to get a feel of what was expected of us. This is where I started to get a little worried as I have absolutely no drawing abilities and have only previously done basic renderings on Photoshop. Luckily all of the work in Politecnico tends to be done in groups of 3 or 4, which made the project a little bit easier.
We also covered Ergonomics - the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimise human well-being and overall system performance - as well as measurements for commercial spaces. Finally we looked at some of the existing visual merchandising concepts in designer stores around Italy, and ended the day by going to visit the famous shopping district to gather ideas and inspirations from existing designer stores around Milan.
